SHOWING IN ALTERNATIVE VENUES

SHOWING IN ALTERNATIVE VENUES

December 18, 2018

There is a sweet point of tension between conventional gallery displays and showing art in alternative venues. Somehow the art and the venue have to feel each other out to start a dance or a dialogue.

There may be the creative challenges of how and where to hang or place the work, how to address lighting and how to entice people to discover the art in a new setting.

All of it was at play in this weekend show somewhere in the Flemish countryside. It was a low-key event echoing my long absence on the continent.

But the challenges were riveting, fun and spontaneous and first time visitors and collectors alike were charmed by this venue.

Not only did it work,  it inspired the project of a winter show in an alternative venue closer to home. Stay tuned for more!
